The collection consists mainly of research materials compiled by the Clements. There are field notes, photographs, and negatives from 1893-1944, chiefly regarding vegetation and ecology of the Great Plains and the American West and Southwest. Also included are subject cards to the research; an herbarium card file; glass negatives and positive slides showing vegetation and grasses from California and Colorado; correspondence with colleagues regarding scientific research; manuscripts and articles on scientific topics; and a pair of binoculars. In addition, there are also Edith Clements' diaries from 1907-1966, family photographs, poems, essays, and sketches.

Frederic and Edith Clements were husband and wife botanists and pioneering ecologists. Frederic (1874-1945) was educated at the University of Nebraska, receiving his Ph. D. in 1898. He taught at Nebraska from 1894-1907, was head of the University of Minnesota Botany Department from 1907-1917, and was a research associate at the Carnegie Institution of Washington from 1917 until his retirement in 1941.
